我所以會走上學術的這條道路乃受大學師長們的啟發，這是我生命中最感念的。在馬來亞大學中文系念本科的時候，我遇上了林水檺及何國忠老師，他們帶領我認識了學術的世界，使我日後有志於從事學術研究。1995年，我南下到新加坡國立大學念研究所，我有緣受業於從臺灣前來客卿的戴璉璋老師。他在講儒家的課時，令我聽了非常地感動，此外，他的處世待人也自然流露儒者的風範，在他的感染下，我開始選擇了從事儒家思想的研究。

      2000年，我又重新回到闊別幾年的母校念博士班。通過楊松年老師的穿針引線，我與在北美讀書及任教多年的勞悅強老師相識。第一次拜會閒聊，他給我留下了很深刻的印象。他問我想研究什麼及為什麼選擇這個範圍？在討論的過程中，我發現他是一位思考敏銳及循循善誘的老師。討論了幾個課題後，最後他說：“如果你選擇研究錢穆，我願意指導你。”此外，在閒談中，我則問了老師為什麼從美國來到新加坡任教，他說：“你相信不相信‘緣分’？”事隔多年，我的人生閱歷也開始逐漸的豐富，現在我能更好的體會所謂“緣分”的道理。與勞老師朝夕相處了幾年，他給了我一個能獨立做學問的生命，更重要的，他在日常中實踐孔子教誨的精神，給了我一個為人師的學習楷模。

       我回來教書後，也開始從事馬來西亞華人的研究。自鄭良樹及林水檺老師們開始，中文系的學人都需要兼顧傳統中國學問及本土華人社會的研究；若我們不主動去研究本地華人社會，似乎沒有人或更適合的人來幫忙耕耘這個領域。處在一個種族主義的國度，學術又相對的不發達，從事學術研究及整個社會所面對諸種困難及問題也真的一言難盡。這也許是我們這一代學人的宿命。然而，我並不後悔留在馬來西亞耕耘這塊荒蕪的田地。我始終相信民族文化是有生命的，需要人來養育。我希望能找到有“緣分”的同道共同耕耘這塊田地，所謂“人能弘道”，故我相信荒蕪之地始終會開出美麗的奇葩……。
